Spanning across multiple continents & cultures, The Burial Tree has practical and religious reasons for its use, this representation in its North American roots. As such all ingredients used were grown in North America.

.

The various peoples who use a form of Tree burial from around the world are: Aborigines (Central Australia), Bali Aga (Bali), Naga (India), Sioux, Ute, Assiniboine, Crow, Mandan, & Navajo (North America).

During the winter months, when the ground was frozen and too difficult to dig a grave, a burial scaffolding or tree was used to temporarily place corpses until they could properly inter the dead.

.

The corpse was tightly wrapped in cloth, blankets, sewed into deerskin or buffalo shroud then attached to a bier or placed in a coffin.

That was then secured to a load bearing branch at least eight feet off the ground (to avoid animals getting to the cadaver).

Once secured, the body sometimes had a basket covering or structure protecting it from scavengers. The natural elements and carrion feeders would efficiently remove the soft tissue. After some time, the remains were often defleshed and bones put to rest somewhere of cultural importance.

.

Even positioning of the body carried significance, toward the sun, surviving family or homeland was often part of the ritual.

Burial Trees were often used for multiple bodies, were considered sacred and brought the dead closer to the sky in order for the spirit to be released.
